I think SD is a superb software app and it never ceases to amaze me how much Tim and his team can pack into a single product. Support and bug fix requests are dealt with very quickly and new features and enhancements are continuously being worked on and added.
For my flying I need to run SD on a smartphone as I don't have panel space for anything larger, like a Nexus tablet or iPad mini etc. I am not a software developer (but have had some exposure to this career field), so do wonder if a point will eventually be reached when SD will only run on high performance devices if SD continues to be enhanced and improved?
Could the performance issue that some Android users are experiencing be anything to do with the increasing complexity of the SD product and its demand on Android resources?
For my VFR flying requirements I find the functionality offered by version 3.6.2 more than meets my needs. It is very responsive, Android-wise, I can plan, navigate, receive in-flight TAF and METARs, send FPLs and General Aviation Reports (UK Immigration/border requirement) all from a smartphone with a small(ish) display.
So, has the time come when perhaps SD needs to be offered in different versions offering increasing complexity so low(ish) performance devices still respond adequately?
Or, installation switches so certain app features can be turned off/disabled if they aren't required which could/may cause Android (and other OS) performance issues? Discuss! Tony
